42. De Freitas (Handspenalty) 1:0, 57. Tranquilli 2:0, 78. Shabani 3:0

September).

Sidinei Antonio Zeferino de Oliveira, der neue Mittelfeld-Stratege

Barnet FC - Nuneaton FC 1:1 (1:1)
Samstagnachmittag, The Hive, 1507 Zuschauer
16. Hyde, 43. Brown 1:1

The Fitzroy faithful thrill at Cheap Kick's old-style skills

On Saturday the Roys ran out on the Junction Oval, provoking memories of footy long past.

The Junction Oval in St Kilda has been a stage for football theatre since 1886 when the St Kilda Football Club began playing there. It's hosted some big footy moments, such as Fred Fanning's league record of 18 goals in a match in 1947 and the fog match in 1971 in which the players were unable to see their bootlaces.
The ground is no longer a big-time footy venue. Instead it's the home of Old Melburnians, the old boys from Melbourne Grammar, who play in B-grade in the amateur competition. Still, there was plenty of scope for theatre when OMs hosted Fitzroy at the old ground on Saturday.
Fitzroy is the same Fitzroy that went out the AFL's back door in 1996. The club still exists. It just plays in B-grade ammos these days.

Saturday was significant because it marked the first time that the Roys had played at the Junction Oval in one form or another since 1984, when the Roys were the ground's tenant (St Kilda having skived off to Moorabbin in the 1960s). The occasion brought out a score of old Fitzroy supporters who warned president Joan Eddy before the match that she should
look away if she was afraid of tears. The Fitzroy supporters on the wing included Luke the golden retriever, who wore a natty scarf around his neck. A large posse of Fitzroy supporters stood behind the goals.

Phil Hill is a dentist who stands behind the goals most weeks in the Fitzroy jumper that his girlfriend knitted for him in the early '80s. The jumper is legendary not only because it looks like a large tea cosy, but because of the ditty that accompanies it. "She gave him the jumper the day that he dumped her." August 2013)
Hill was excited by the return to the Junction Oval because it gave his 21-year-old son
Peter the chance to see the Roys play on their old ground. Peter was wearing a Fitzroy guernsey with No.85 on the back, the number of full-forward Will Pickering. Phil described Pickering as "the modern incarnation of the fat full-forward". Phil's favourite player was Jim O'Reilly, a player he called "Cheap Kick", who gladdened the hearts of old Fitzroy supporters when he kicked the game's first goal.
Fitzroy had pounded the goals in the opening minutes only to find new and improved ways to miss. Enter Cheap Kick, who, in the mercurial fashion of old Fitzroy, slotted his goal from the boundary.
Despite Fitzroy's festivities, a strangeness accompanied the game because it might be the last footy match to be played at the Junction Oval. The ground is now in the hands of Cricket Victoria, which is planning an upgrade as a year-round venue of flannelled excellence.
Cricket Victoria is in talks with the federal government, the state government, Cricket Australia, the Melbourne Cricket Club and the AFL about raising the $50 million it needs to carry out its plans. No one knows how long the process will take, but Old Melburnians footy club president Stuart Rose said he'd be surprised if his club was kicked off before next footy season.
"That'd be long odds," he said.
The area in front of the Kevin Murray Stand featured the Old Melburnians barbecue. While supporters lined up for a snag early in the senior match, a reserves player left on a skateboard. The days of big-money excellence are a little way off yet.
